We care for them, we feed them, water them, ensure that they are fitted with microchips, we keep them healthy and try to ensure their adoption, and we defend their rights – every step of the way!
The health, well-being and good treatment of animals is a top priority for the City of Athens. This is ensured in practice, by the multi-faceted work performed by the Municipal Authority in the different neighbourhoods and in the city centre. Specifically:
- Over the last year, more than 1000 cats and dogs have received veterinary care, while adoptive and foster homes were found for more than 400 pets.
- We implemented a new, soon-to-be-repeated programme for free fitting of microchips for dogs and cats whose “parents” are residents of the City and who belong to vulnerable groups.
- We install kennels, feeders and water troughs throughout the city, to provide our four-legged friends with nourishment and safety.
- We cooperate with Athenian organizations and volunteers.
- We are planning the first dog parks around the city, with the aim of establishing at least two in each municipal district. The temporary dog shelter has been up and running since early in the year, and the first Municipal Veterinary Clinic is to be completed and handed over soon.
